Bluegrass Orthopaedics would like to acknowledge our latest comeback champion - Mr. Daren Turner. Daren has always lived an active lifestyle, including racing dirt bikes and cars, participated in high level board sports, and even boxed golden gloves when he was younger. At age 52, Daren wanted to continue being active, and had no desire to slow down. Unfortunately, a bad motorcycle accident 27 years ago, along with the multiple surgeries, meant that another surgery would be needed to allow Daren to continue water sports and living the life he desired.
The X-Rays here show the change and deterioration of Daren's joint from the first image taken in 2006, until one from July of 2019. His prior surgeries had done well to support his knee until now, however hardware removal and a total knee replacement would be needed to decrease pain and allow for Daren's high activity level. During the procedure, Dr. Christian Christensen, noted deterioration of Daren's cartilage throughout his knee with increased degeneration over his lateral joint.
This surgical procedure was not the atypical total knee replacement. Dr. Christensen advised Daren that this was a major orthopedic surgical procedure, and his recovery would not be easy. BGO's home health physical therapist, Chris Bagbey, would work with Daren to restore his motion and strength.
"Daren was faced with adversity when it came to his knee replacement from the beginning", remembers his physical therapist, Chris. "Having hardware removed and a total implant done on the same day was quite a feat, not only for his surgeon, but also for Daren and his subsequent support system. Daren faced this challenge head on and got to work on his therapy right away. As in his professional life, Daren accepted the difficult challenge and rose above. His hard work and dedication has allowed him to return to his activity level prior to surgery and live a pain free life."
Daren had this to say about his (champion) comeback: "The service that I received was top notch and made a difficult surgery a great experience. From the day I walked in, through my last day of therapy, was the best service anyone could ask to receive. The first time I met Chris (PT), he got to know me personally and we built a trust and friendship that motivated me to push through the challenges and adversity that comes with physical therapy. My overall experience couldn't have gone any better."
