LEXINGTON, KY - Bluegrass Orthopaedics (BGO), a premier provider of comprehensive orthopaedic services in Central Kentucky for over 25 years, has worked diligently over the past few months with Transylvania University Athletics in building a partnership to provide medical coverage for all (27) interscholastic sports.
BGO will provide Transylvania Athletics with full-time athletic trainers, orthopaedic physician coverage, access to sub-specialists, and capital support to expand their sports medicine program. BGO's convenient locations throughout Lexington, along with their investments in technology and highly-trained medical professionals, will allow for further investment in the sports medicine program at Transylvania University.
Bluegrass Orthopaedics provides sports medicine services to over (9) high schools, (5) athletic clubs and organizations, multiple professional sporting events, and now NCAA Division III Transylvania University Athletics.
BGO's Director of Business Development, Andrew Carlson, shares "Our sports medicine outreach program has provided healthcare coverage to a variety of organizations, and we are humbled by the opportunity to welcome Transylvania University into our family. Our team approach to our sports medicine program is vital for its success - we utilize not only our athletic trainers, but also our sub-specialty trained physicians, physician assistants, physical therapists, and hand specialists."
"Our athletic trainers collaborate closely with our physicians, led by sports medicine specialist Dr. Owen McGonigle, to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions. We look forward to partnering with Transylvania University to help care for their student-athletes and the entire Transylvania community."
Director of Sports Medicine at Transylvania, Nicholas Reuss, MS, LAT, ATC, PEC, CES will lead the team of athletic trainers on campus with support from the orthopaedic physicians at Bluegrass Orthopaedics. Current Transylvania Assistant Athletic Trainers Kyle Sutton and Christa Hendley will join Reuss in continuing to provide daily coverage for Transylvania's 27 varsity sports.
"The sports medicine team at Transylvania University is happy to partner with Bluegrass Orthopaedics. Our team is excited to be working with Dr. McGonigle and all the physicians at BGO to provide the highest level of care for our student-athletes. We are thrilled to see what the future holds."
The development of this relationship has also allowed for an addition of a fourth athletic trainer to the Transylvania University sports medicine team. Joining the Transylvania Athletic Training staff is Ashley Higginbotham. Higginbotham joins Transylvania from Northern Kentucky University where she spent the past year as its certified Athletic Training Intern, providing sport medicine coverage for softball. Prior to her time at Northern Kentucky, Higginbotham served as a graduate assistant athletic trainer at Bluffton University from 2018 to 2020 where she completed her master's degree in Business Administration. Higginbotham graduated from the University of Cincinnati in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.
"We are excited about this new partnership and believe it will be a win-win for everyone, especially for our student-athletes," commented Vice President for Athletics, Dr. Holly Sheilley. "BGO has passion and expertise to help us to continue to build a healthy environment for all our teams to compete safely and that is our number one priority."
Furthering its commitment to the academic growth of Transylvania students pursuing education in sports medicine and related medical curriculum, Bluegrass Orthopaedics will also create new experiential academic opportunities at its local clinics, including but not limited to internships, job shadowing, and observation time at their Central Kentucky offices.
The partnership between Bluegrass Orthopaedics and Transylvania Athletics will be effective in advance of the 2021-2022 academic season.
